Portal Bridge Urgently Needs to be Replaced

Construction of a new bridge to replace a 1910-era commuter rail bridge across the Hackensack River that delayed thousands of people last week could start later this year, officials said.

Federal funding to replace the Portal Bridge in Kearny could be secured in the middle of the year and construction, which would take several years, could start soon after, said John Porcari, Gateway Development Corporation acting executive director on Thursday.
